City of Marion

Changes In Yard Waste Pickup Effective November 18

This is to notify City of Marion residents to changes that were made recently regarding the specifications for placement of trees, limbs, trimmings, and other dry refuse (hereinafter referred to as “yard waste”) for removal by the City of Marion Sanitation Department.  These changes were necessary because the Sanitation Department recently began using a knuckle boom loader to facilitate a safer and more efficient method of yard waste removal.  Using the knuckle boom loader, Sanitation Employees pick up whole piles of yard waste, as opposed to removing and chipping the piles limb by limb.

Effective November 1, 2019, please follow the specifications listed below when placing yard waste at the edge of the street or edge of the sidewalk for removal by the City.

·         Please do not place yard waste directly on the street or sidewalk.  Yard waste is to be placed at the edge of the street or at the edge of the sidewalk.

·         Yard waste is to be placed in an area with no less than 10 feet of overhead clearance.  If an area with 10 feet or greater of overhead clearance is not available near the edge of the street or edge of the sidewalk, please call the Public Works Department to be advised as to where the yard waste should be placed for removal.

·         Tree trunks and limbs are to be placed with all cut ends facing in the same direction.

·         Tree trunks and limbs shall not exceed 8 feet in length or 100 pounds in weight.

·         Tree trunks and limbs shall not exceed 4 inches in diameter.

·         Tree stumps shall not exceed 100 pounds in weight.

·         As always, grass clippings, leaves, and small trimmings are to be bagged and placed at the edge of the street or edge of the sidewalk.

Your adherence to the specifications listed above is greatly appreciated.  The City of Marion Sanitation Department strives to provide excellent customer service to the citizens of Marion and we believe the addition of the knuckle boom loader will only enhance our ability to do so.  If you have any questions regarding the specifications for the placement of yard waste or regarding any Sanitation service, please call the Public Works Department at 828-652-4224.

Community Building Park Tennis Courts Closed Due to Threat of Sinkholes

The tennis courts located at the Community Building Park have been closed due to a recent engineering evaluation that showed a high likelihood of sinkholes under the tennis court area.  The City's consulting engineers recommended that the tennis courts be closed, in the interest of public safety.  All areas of the Community Building Park, with the exception of the splash pad and picnic shelter, are now closed until further notice.

Community Building Park Closed Due to Sinkhole

The Community Building Park, except for the tennis court, splash pad area and the upper picnic shleter next to Logan Street, is closed until further notice due to sinkholes in the Park.  In early April, a sinkhole formed underneath one of the basketball courts.  Subsequent investigations determined that a concrete culvert, likely dating back to the construction of the Community Building Park in the 1950’s or the construction of the Community Building in the mid 1930’s, had become deteriorated, leading to the sinkhole.  The concrete culvert in question appears to run from Main Street to a large drain pipe that was replaced by the City approximately 12 years ago.  City personnel consulted with an engineer, who provided advice on determining the extent of the problem.

City personnel excavated next to the sinkhole on April 26 and were able to put the City camera in the deteriorated concrete culvert running toward Main Street.  The video showed considerable deterioration of both the top and bottom of this culvert.  City crews were able to run the camera 61 feet toward Main Street before it fell into another sinkhole near the swing sets in the park.  Fortunately, the City retrieved the camera and there was no damage.  On April 27, City crews are excavating the new sinkhole and seeing how far the camera can run toward Main Street.  This process will be repeated until the full extent of the problem is known.

As a result of the excavation and there being at least one sinkhole under the playground, the City has closed the Community Building Park immediately and indefinitely, except for the tennis courts and splash pad.  The splash pad is not yet open, but will open in the next few weeks as usual.

The City hopes to determine the full scope of the problem and undertake needed repairs as soon as possible.  The City apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the Park closure, but believes that the closure is in the best interest of public safety.

During this closure period, the City urges the public to consider use of other City community parks: West Marion Park located on Addie’s Chapel Drive on Ridley Street next to Addie’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Cross Mill Park located on Granby Street near the old Cross Cotton Mill, Clinchfield Park located on Hill Street near the old Clinchfield Mill and Eastfield Park, located on Perry Street next to Eastfield Global Magnet School.  Each of these community parks has a parking area, picnic shelter, playground area, walking track and basketball court.
