Trees at the Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway

While enjoying a walk along the Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway, you will notice a variety of trees on the path. McDowell Technical Community College, the City of Marion and the NC Forest Service have partnered to create a Tree Identification Program to educate greenway users on the types of trees that are found there. Certain trees will have a plaque with a unique code that, when scanned with a smart phone, will access a web page via the smart phone containing information about that tree. This information includes, but is not limited to, a brief description of the tree, the tree type, the tree’s mature height and diameter, and uses of the tree.

An overview of the trees in the identification program at the greenway can be found here. The list of trees on the trail is below. You may click on any tree to obtain detailed information on the tree.
